Sofa Guarantees & Warranties UK: What Is Actually Covered?

A long sofa guarantee can sound reassuring, but the headline number rarely applies to every part of the sofa. A retailer might offer 15, 20 or even a lifetime structural guarantee while fabric, cushions, stitching, recliner mechanisms and electrical parts are covered for a much shorter period.

Before you buy, check what is covered, for how long, what is excluded and what proof you will need if something goes wrong.

Guarantee vs warranty: what matters to a sofa buyer?

Retailers use the words “guarantee” and “warranty” in slightly different ways, so the label matters less than the written terms. Read the actual coverage for the frame, suspension, upholstery, cushions, mechanisms and electrical parts.

Also remember that a commercial guarantee or warranty is additional to your statutory consumer rights. GOV.UK states that customers can still have rights to a repair or replacement for faulty goods even if a warranty or guarantee has expired, depending on the circumstances.

Why the headline guarantee can be misleading

The longest period usually applies to the sofa’s structure, not every component.

For example, DFS currently provides a 15-year structural guarantee for most upholstered furniture covering the frame construction and suspension, while its fabrics, leathers, fillings, stitching, recliner mechanisms and electrical components are covered for 2 years.

Furniture Village currently advertises a 20-year structural guarantee covering elements such as frames, springs and webbing on standard furniture purchases, while components including recliner mechanisms, sofa-bed actions, motors, covers and stitching are covered for 2 years.

Sofology currently provides a Lifetime Structural Warranty on qualifying new made-to-order, Quick Delivery and certain online clearance purchases, while coverings, cushions, feet, stitching, mechanisms and electrical components carry a 2-year Manufacturing Warranty. Sofology’s in-store clearance / Rehome Me items have different terms.

Long structural guarantees often apply to the sofa frame and support system rather than every upholstered or moving component.

What is usually included in a structural sofa guarantee?

Structural cover commonly focuses on the parts that make up the core of the sofa, such as:

  • the internal wooden frame;
  • frame construction;
  • springs;
  • webbing or other suspension systems;
  • structural joints.

The exact wording varies by retailer, so do not assume a long structural guarantee covers upholstery, cushions or moving parts.

What may have a shorter warranty?

These parts often have a shorter period than the frame:

  • fabric and leather coverings;
  • seat and back cushion interiors;
  • stitching;
  • recliner mechanisms;
  • motors and switches;
  • other electrical components;
  • sofa-bed mechanisms;
  • adjustable headrests or armrests.

If one of these features matters to you, check its specific warranty period rather than relying on the headline structural guarantee.

Recliner buyers should check the mechanism separately

A recliner sofa can have a long structural guarantee but much shorter cover for the parts that actually move. DFS currently covers recliner mechanisms and relevant electrical components for 2 years, while Furniture Village lists recliner mechanisms and motors among components covered for 2 years.

If you are buying a power or manual recliner, compare both the structural guarantee and the mechanism/electrical warranty. Use the HODEALS Recliner Sofa Measurements Guide for the space and mechanism-planning checks as well.

Do sofa guarantees cover wear and tear?

Usually not. DFS, Furniture Village and Sofology all exclude normal wear and tear from their standard structural/manufacturing cover. Accidental damage, misuse and failure to maintain the furniture can also be excluded.

This distinction matters because normal softening of cushions, fabric wear or marks from everyday use may not be treated as manufacturing defects.

Maintenance can affect your cover

Some warranty terms require reasonable maintenance. DFS specifically excludes failures caused by failure to maintain furniture, and Sofology lists failure to maintain among its warranty exclusions.

Follow the care label and retailer instructions for plumping, cleaning and general upkeep. For upholstery maintenance, see the HODEALS Sofa Fabric Guide, Sofa Cushion Fillings Guide and Removable Sofa Covers Guide.

Keep your proof of purchase

Do not throw away the order confirmation, invoice or receipt once the sofa is delivered. DFS states that proof of purchase is required to use its guarantee, while Sofology requires the claimant to be the original purchaser and provide proof of purchase.

It is sensible to keep:

  • the order confirmation;
  • the final invoice or receipt;
  • the exact product and fabric name;
  • delivery paperwork;
  • the guarantee or warranty terms that applied when you bought the sofa;
  • photos of the sofa soon after delivery if you need a condition record later.

Check whether the guarantee transfers to a new owner

A long guarantee may not stay with the sofa if you sell or give it away. DFS and Sofology currently state that their upholstered-furniture guarantees/warranties are non-transferable.

If second-hand resale value matters to you, check the transfer rules before assuming the remaining guarantee will pass to another owner.

Be careful with third-party repairs

Do not arrange an outside repair before checking the warranty terms. DFS and Sofology both warn that unauthorised third-party repairs or alterations can void their cover.

If a problem develops during the warranty period, contact the retailer first and ask what inspection or repair process they require.

Clearance sofas may have different cover

Do not assume clearance items carry the same warranty as a new made-to-order sofa. Furniture Village currently states that its clearance products have a 2-year structural guarantee rather than its standard 20-year structural guarantee. Sofology also gives different terms to in-store clearance / Rehome Me items.

Always check the terms for the exact item and sales channel you are using.

Your UK consumer rights are separate

A retailer warranty does not replace your legal rights. GOV.UK states that customers have rights when goods are faulty, not as described or not fit for purpose, and that warranties and guarantees do not remove those rights. Citizens Advice also explains that warranties and guarantees add to your legal rights rather than replacing them.

If you have a real dispute about faulty furniture, use current official consumer guidance for your part of the UK rather than relying on a retailer marketing page or a general buying guide.

Sofa warranty checklist before you buy

  • How long is the structural guarantee?
  • Which parts count as structural?
  • How long are fabric or leather coverings covered?
  • How long are cushion interiors covered?
  • How long are recliner or sofa-bed mechanisms covered?
  • How long are motors and electrical components covered?
  • Are accidental damage and wear and tear excluded?
  • What maintenance is required?
  • Do you need to register the guarantee?
  • What proof of purchase must you keep?
  • Is the guarantee transferable?
  • Could an unauthorised repair void it?
  • Do clearance or ex-display items have different terms?

Before you choose between two sofas

Do not compare only the headline “15-year”, “20-year” or “lifetime” number. Compare the parts most likely to matter for the sofa you are buying. A power recliner, for example, deserves extra attention to mechanism and electrical cover; a fabric sofa buyer may care more about upholstery and stitching cover.

Use the HODEALS Compare tool to record the structural guarantee, component warranties, dimensions, fabric, price and retailer side by side. If timing matters too, compare in-stock vs made-to-order sofa delivery before you decide.
