Removable Sofa Covers UK: Are They Actually Washable?

A removable sofa cover can sound like an easy-care feature, but there is an important catch: removable does not always mean machine-washable.

Some UK sofa covers are designed to come off for washing, while others can be removed for maintenance or replacement but still need specialist cleaning. Before you buy, check the care instructions for the exact sofa and fabric rather than relying on the word “removable”.

Removable vs washable: what is the difference?

A removable cover means the upholstery can be taken off the sofa or cushion. A washable cover means the manufacturer specifically allows washing, usually with a stated temperature and cycle.

Those are not the same thing. DFS currently advises customers not to machine-wash its sofa cushion covers even when they are removable, warning that washing can affect shrinkage, colour and fire-retardant performance. By contrast, IKEA currently sells several UK sofa covers, including HYLTARP and SÖDERHAMN covers, that are explicitly labelled removable and machine-washable at up to 40°C.

What should you check before buying a removable-cover sofa?

• Does the product page explicitly say machine-washable?
• What maximum wash temperature is allowed?
• Can the cover be tumble-dried, or must it air-dry?
• Does the care label require professional dry cleaning?
• Are only the cushion covers removable, or is the whole sofa cover removable?
• Can replacement covers be bought separately later?
• Are spare colours or fabrics available for the same frame?
• Does the manufacturer warn about shrinkage after cleaning?

Loose-cover sofas can be useful if you want flexibility

Some sofas are designed around detachable “loose covers” rather than fixed upholstery. John Lewis currently offers selected Loose Cover sofa ranges where extra detachable covers can be purchased, allowing the look of the sofa to be changed without replacing the frame.

This can be useful if you expect the room colour scheme to change, want a spare cover, or prefer a sofa where the outer upholstery is replaceable. But the care instructions still matter: John Lewis advises following the specific instructions supplied with its loose-covered upholstery and notes that some covers allow for shrinkage after the first clean.

Are removable covers better for homes with children or pets?

They can be convenient, but only if the cover is genuinely practical to clean. A removable but specialist-clean-only cover may not offer the same everyday convenience as a cover the manufacturer explicitly allows you to machine-wash.

For a busy household, compare the full care routine rather than just looking for the word “removable”. Consider:

• how quickly spills can be treated;
• whether the cover can be washed at home;
• how long it will take to dry;
• whether the sofa can still be used while a cover is being cleaned;
• whether spare or replacement covers are sold.

Why you should not guess the washing instructions

Different upholstery fabrics react differently to water, heat, detergent and agitation. A domestic washing machine can cause some covers to shrink, lose colour or change texture. The manufacturer’s care label should therefore take priority over general cleaning advice.

DFS currently recommends spot-cleaning spills promptly and following the care guidance supplied for the particular sofa. Sofology similarly advises against putting its scatter-cushion covers in a washing machine and recommends using the care method specified for the fabric.

What about fixed sofa covers?

Fixed upholstery is designed to stay on the frame. John Lewis advises that fixed-cover upholstery should be cleaned while it remains on the furniture and recommends professional cleaning periodically for its fixed upholstery.

A fixed cover is not automatically a disadvantage. It can give a more tailored appearance and avoid the need to remove and refit fabric. The trade-off is that deep cleaning is usually less convenient than with a genuinely washable loose cover.

Check the fabric as well as the cover design

The same removable-cover idea can behave very differently depending on the textile. Cotton blends, polyester mixes, chenille, velvet and other fabrics can all have different cleaning requirements.

What if you want to change the sofa colour later?

If changing the look later matters to you, check whether replacement covers are sold separately for the exact model. IKEA currently sells separate covers for several sofa families, while John Lewis highlights extra detachable covers on selected Loose Cover ranges.

That option can extend the useful life of a sofa frame if the cover becomes worn or if your décor changes, but availability, colour choice and compatibility can change over time. Check the current range before relying on future replacement covers.

• Confirm whether the cover is removable.
• Confirm whether it is actually machine-washable.
• Read the maximum wash temperature.
• Check drying and ironing restrictions.
• Check whether dry cleaning is required or allowed.
• Find out whether the whole cover or only cushion covers come off.
• Check whether spare covers are currently sold.
• Look for any shrinkage allowance or refitting instructions.
• Compare the fabric type and stain-care guidance.
• Keep the manufacturer’s care instructions after delivery.

Before you buy

If easy cleaning is a priority, look for wording that explicitly says the cover is removable and machine-washable, then read the temperature and drying instructions. Do not assume removability alone guarantees home washing.
