TV Stand Size Guide UK: How Wide and High Should a TV Unit Be?

Choosing a TV stand is less about matching the number on the television box and more about checking three real measurements: the television’s overall width, the footprint of its feet or central base, and the height of the screen when you are seated. Use this UK measuring guide before shortlisting a media unit.

1. Measure the actual television width

A 55-inch television is measured diagonally across its screen; it is not 55 inches wide. Look up the exact model’s set width with stand in the manufacturer’s specifications. As one concrete example, Samsung lists a 55-inch QN80F at 122.76 cm wide with its stand. Another 55-inch model may differ, so do not shop from diagonal size alone.

Measure the widest part of the TV and check whether the feet sit near the edges or on a central pedestal. The feet must rest securely on the unit without overhang. Also check the television’s weight against the furniture’s stated load limit.

2. How wide should a TV stand be?

As a useful starting point, choose a unit wider than the television body, with some space visible on either side. This is a proportion and safety consideration, not a fixed legal measurement. IKEA’s UK TV-bench guidance likewise recommends a bench wider than the screen.

Worked example: if your television is 123 cm wide and the media unit is 150 cm wide, the difference is 27 cm, or roughly 13.5 cm of space on each side when centred. That may look balanced, but only if the feet, load rating and placement requirements also work. A wider 180 cm unit would leave about 28.5 cm on each side.

For a wall-mounted television, the cabinet need not physically support the screen, but its width should still suit the wall, storage requirements and overall composition.

3. How high should the media unit be?

Start with your normal viewing position, not a showroom photograph. Sit on the sofa and note your comfortable eye height. The centre of the screen should generally be near seated eye level, without needing to tilt your head for long periods. The ideal cabinet height therefore depends on the TV’s stand and screen height as well as the sofa.

If the television is wall-mounted, check the planned screen position first and then select the cabinet height for the room and the devices it needs to hold.

4. Check depth, ventilation and cable access

Depth matters even when the front of the unit looks generous. Compare the cabinet’s usable top depth with the TV base depth, not just the screen thickness. Leave the ventilation clearances required by the specific TV, games console, amplifier and other electronics; do not assume that an enclosed cupboard will keep equipment cool enough.

Measure plug protrusion, cable bends and access to rear sockets. If you use a soundbar, check its depth and height so it does not obstruct the television picture or remote sensor. For closed cupboards, confirm internal shelf dimensions and ventilation openings.

5. Plan the whole wall, not just the cabinet

Use masking tape on the floor or wall to mark the proposed cabinet width and depth. Check walkways, opening doors, nearby sockets and how the unit sits relative to the sofa and coffee table. If you need drawers or hinged doors, measure their fully open clearance. Check delivery access, assembly, wall-fixing instructions and anti-tip requirements before ordering.

TV stand measurement checklist

  • TV: exact model width, stand-foot spacing and depth, overall weight, and screen-centre height.
  • Furniture: overall width, top depth, height, maximum supported weight and usable internal storage.
  • Room: seated eye height, sockets, cable route, door swings and ventilation.
  • Purchase: delivery access, assembly, anti-tip guidance, current retailer price and confirmed stock.

Compare TV units with HODEALS

When your measurements are ready, browse HODEALS TV Stands & Entertainment Units and compare the available dimensions with your room. The selection is currently limited and individual retailer availability may be uncertain, so always confirm stock and the final price at the retailer before buying.
