A recliner sofa needs more planning than a standard fixed sofa because its footprint changes when you use it. The dimensions shown on a product page may describe the sofa in its normal position, while the footrest and back can require substantially more room once the mechanism opens.

This guide explains the measurements to check before you shortlist a recliner sofa in the UK.

Start with the sofa’s closed dimensions

Record the overall width, depth and height first. These tell you whether the sofa fits the intended area when it is not reclining. Then check the fully reclined depth
