1. Set your maximum sofa width
Measure the wall or area where the sofa will sit. Then allow space for doors, radiators, side tables and comfortable movement around the room. Your usable maximum width matters more than a label such as “small living room”.
2. Check depth as well as width
Deep sofas can project much further into the room than expected. Measure from the wall to the furthest point you are comfortable using, and remember that recliners and sofa beds may need extra clearance.
3. Measure the delivery route
Record the narrowest doorway, hallway width, stair turns and lift dimensions. Pay attention to sharp turns rather than measuring only straight openings.
4. Look for delivery details
Boxed, modular and section-delivered sofas can be easier to manoeuvre. Removable legs or arms may also help, but only rely on these features when the retailer confirms them.

A simple way to avoid measurement mistakes
Measure each important point at least twice and write the numbers down in centimetres. If a wall, doorway or hallway is uneven, use the narrowest usable measurement rather than the widest. For access checks, include door frames, bannisters, radiators and any fixed furniture that reduces the clear opening.
It also helps to mark the proposed sofa footprint on the floor with masking tape or sheets of paper. This gives you a more realistic feel for how much walking space remains and whether doors, drawers or side tables can still be used comfortably.
Room fit and delivery fit are different
A sofa can fit perfectly once it is in the room but still be difficult to deliver. Room-fit measurements tell you whether the sofa works in the final position. Delivery-fit measurements tell you whether the sofa can physically reach that position. Treat them as two separate checks.
