A sofa needs to fit twice: once in the room, and once through the route to get there.
Buying a sofa becomes much easier when you separate room fit from delivery access. A sofa can look perfect on a floor plan and still be difficult to get through a doorway, around a tight landing or into a lift.

Can the sofa physically pass through every doorway, hall, stair turn, landing and lift on the route?
01 · SET YOUR MAXIMUM WIDTH
Start with the usable space, not the label on the sofa.
Measure the wall or floor area where the sofa will sit, then allow space for doors, radiators, side tables and comfortable movement around the room.
Your usable maximum width is more valuable than a broad label such as “small living room”. Write the figure down in centimetres and use it as a firm shortlist limit.
02 · CHECK DEPTH AS WELL AS WIDTH
Deep sofas can change the room more than expected.
Measure from the wall to the furthest point you are comfortable using. A deep sofa can project much further into the room than it appears in a product photograph.

03 · MEASURE THE DELIVERY ROUTE
The narrowest point controls the route.
Record the narrowest doorway, hallway width, stair turn and lift dimensions. Pay particular attention to sharp turns rather than measuring only straight openings.
If a wall, doorway or hallway is uneven, use the narrowest usable measurement rather than the widest. Include door frames, bannisters, radiators and fixed furniture that reduce the clear opening.
04 · CHECK HOW THE SOFA ARRIVES
Packaging and removable parts can change what is possible.
Boxed, modular and section-delivered sofas can be easier to manoeuvre. Removable legs or arms may also help, but only rely on these features when the retailer confirms them.
HODEALS rule: if delivery information is missing, treat it as unknown rather than guessing. Always verify the retailer’s latest dimensions and delivery details before ordering.
The measurement checklist.
Room: maximum sofa width and maximum comfortable depth.
Doors and halls: narrowest usable openings, including frames.
Stairs and lifts: turns, landings, ceiling clearance and lift dimensions.
Double-check: measure each important point at least twice and record the numbers in centimetres.
PRACTICAL NOTE
Mark the footprint before you trust the floor plan.
Use masking tape or sheets of paper to mark the proposed sofa footprint on the floor. Walk around it and check whether doors, drawers and side tables can still be used comfortably.
This simple exercise often reveals circulation problems that are difficult to judge from numbers alone.

Should I leave extra space around the sofa?
Usually, yes. Leave enough clearance for comfortable movement and for doors or storage to open. The exact amount depends on your room layout.
What if the retailer does not give full delivery dimensions?
Treat that information as unknown and contact the retailer before ordering. Do not assume the assembled sofa dimensions are the same as the packaged delivery dimensions.
Do removable feet guarantee a sofa will fit?
No. They may help, but only rely on removable parts when the retailer confirms which sections can be detached for delivery.
