Sharing a sofa with a dog or cat changes what matters when you shop. Comfort and style still count, but so do claw snagging, pet hair, muddy paws, stain cleanup and how easy the upholstery is to maintain.

There is no single sofa fabric that is best for every pet. A calm short-haired dog, a long-haired cat and a young pet that scratches or digs can put very different demands on upholstery. The useful approach is to match the fabric and construction to your pet’s habits.

What makes a sofa more pet-friendly?

For most pet-owning households, the practical features to compare are:

• how easily claws can catch or snag the surface;
• how visible pet hair is on the fabric;
• how easy muddy marks and small spills are to clean;
• whether cushion or sofa covers are removable;
• whether those removable covers are actually machine-washable;
• whether the colour helps disguise everyday shedding;
• whether the sofa has moving mechanisms that need extra care around pets.

Watch out for loops, decorative weaves and high piles

Do not choose a sofa from a single “pet-proof” label. Compare the actual weave, pile, cleaning instructions, colour and cover design against your own pet’s behaviour. A material that works well for one household may be a poor match for another.
