In-Stock vs Made-to-Order Sofa UK: Which Should You Choose?

When you need a sofa quickly, an in-stock or quick-delivery model can be attractive. If you care more about choosing the exact fabric, colour, size or configuration, a made-to-order sofa may give you more choice but usually involves a longer lead time.

The useful comparison is not simply “fast versus slow”. Check what is actually in stock, what can be customised, the quoted delivery estimate, and whether mixing stocked and made-to-order items changes the timing of the whole order.

What does “in stock” or “quick delivery” mean?

In-stock or quick-delivery sofas are models, colours or configurations that a retailer has already produced or allocated for faster fulfilment. The exact range can be narrower than the full made-to-order catalogue.

DFS currently says its quick-delivery sofas are stocked versions of popular shapes, colours and fabrics, with selected products available on shorter lead times. Sofology currently describes its quick-delivery range as a curated selection of in-stock sofas available from 14 days.

What does “made to order” mean?

A made-to-order sofa is produced after you choose the specification. That can allow a wider combination of upholstery, size, seat type, orientation, feet, modules or other options, depending on the range.

DFS says many of its sofas are handmade to order so buyers can choose the comfort, size, shape and fabric. Sofology currently describes its main sofa range as handcrafted and made to order.

In-stock vs made-to-order at a glance

Factor In stock / quick delivery Made to order
Delivery speed Usually faster Usually longer lead time
Choice Often limited to selected sizes, colours or fabrics Usually broader configuration choice
Customisation More limited Often greater
Best for Deadlines, new homes, replacing a sofa quickly Buyers prioritising a specific specification
Risk to check Assuming every option in the range is stocked Assuming the estimated date is guaranteed

Do not assume every sofa in a quick-delivery range is identical

A retailer may stock only selected combinations. The same sofa family can have one colour or size on quick delivery while another version is made to order.

Sofology, for example, currently marks selected items within some ranges as “In stock & delivered from 14 days”, while other configurations on the same range can show longer made-to-order lead times.

Always check the exact product code, size, colour and orientation you are putting in the basket.

How fast is quick delivery?

There is no universal UK quick-delivery timeframe. DFS currently promotes selected quick-delivery furniture with estimates that can be as short as around one to two weeks on specific products, while Sofology advertises selected in-stock sofas from 14 days. Furniture Village currently has a Quick Delivery section with products promoted for delivery within 21 days, with some stock deals showing shorter windows.

These are current retailer examples, not promises for every sofa. Delivery estimates can vary by product, postcode, stock position and order conditions.

Made-to-order lead times can vary by configuration

One made-to-order sofa may take longer than another even from the same retailer. Upholstery choice, manufacturing location, configuration and seasonal demand can all affect the estimated lead time.

Do not rely on a general “typical delivery” claim if the product page gives a more specific estimate for the exact version you selected.

Mixing in-stock and made-to-order items can delay the whole order

This is an easy detail to miss. Sofology currently states that if one order combines its “14 Day Delivery” stocked items with made-to-order items, the order is delivered on the longest lead time unless the items are placed as separate orders, in which case separate delivery charges can apply.

If you are buying a sofa plus a chair, footstool or another matching piece, check whether one slower item will hold back everything else.

Delivery estimates are not always guaranteed dates

A product page may give an estimated delivery window rather than a fixed appointment. Furniture Village explicitly states that its estimated delivery times are given in good faith based on the best information available, and notes that some locations can require additional delivery time.

If you have a hard deadline such as a house move, family visit or tenancy start, ask what the retailer can actually commit to before ordering.

Check whether delivery includes room placement and assembly

Speed is only part of the delivery decision. Also check what happens when the sofa arrives.

DFS says its made-to-order sofas are delivered by The Sofa Delivery Company, with installation included for eligible sofa deliveries. Furniture Village describes its Premium Delivery Service as room-of-choice delivery with assembly where appropriate.

Delivery services and charges vary, so read the exact terms for your postcode and product.

Quick delivery does not remove the need to measure access

A sofa arriving next week is no use if it cannot get through the door or around the hallway turn. Measure the full delivery route before ordering, especially when buying under time pressure.

Use the HODEALS Door Fit Guide and Sofa Clearance Guide before you place the order.

Check orientation before ordering a stocked corner sofa

Quick-delivery corner and chaise sofas are often stocked in specific left-hand or right-hand configurations. If you choose the wrong orientation, the fast delivery is not useful.

Use the HODEALS Left-Hand vs Right-Hand Corner Sofa Guide to check the orientation carefully.

Does made to order mean better quality?

Not automatically. “Made to order” describes how the sofa is produced and allocated, not a universal quality grade. DFS explicitly says its stocked quick-delivery sofas receive the same manufacturing care as its made-to-order sofas.

Judge quality using the frame, suspension, cushion filling, upholstery, mechanism and warranty rather than assuming production method alone tells you how long the sofa will last.

For those checks, see the HODEALS Cushion Fillings Guide, Sofa Fabric Guide and Sofa Guarantees & Warranties Guide.

When an in-stock sofa may make more sense

  • You have a firm moving or furnishing deadline.
  • Your current sofa has failed and needs replacing quickly.
  • You are happy with one of the stocked colours and configurations.
  • You do not need a highly specific fabric, foot, module or seat option.
  • You have confirmed the exact product is genuinely in stock for your postcode.

When made to order may make more sense

  • You want a specific fabric or colour not held in stock.
  • You need a particular left/right orientation or modular configuration.
  • You want to choose between seat fillings, feet or other range-specific options.
  • You are willing to wait for the specification you actually want.
  • You have flexibility around the delivery date.

In-stock vs made-to-order checklist

  • Is the exact item marked in stock, or only the range?
  • What delivery estimate is shown for the exact size, colour and orientation?
  • Is that date an estimate or a guaranteed date?
  • Will another item in the same order delay the whole delivery?
  • Does the delivery service include room placement or assembly?
  • Have you measured doors, hallways, stairs and turns?
  • Have you checked left/right orientation on corner or chaise sofas?
  • What customisation options are you giving up for faster delivery?
  • What warranty applies to the exact sofa?
  • Are the cancellation or change terms different once production has started?

Before you choose

Choose quick delivery when the available stocked specification genuinely suits you and timing matters. Choose made to order when the extra choice is more important than speed. In both cases, rely on the exact product-page estimate and order terms rather than a generic delivery promise.

Use the HODEALS Compare tool to record delivery estimate, dimensions, fabric, warranty, price and retailer side by side before you decide.
