The frame is the hidden structure carrying the sofa, but product descriptions can make frame quality sound simpler than it is. A label such as hardwood frame can be useful information, but it should not be treated as a complete quality score on its own.

Why the sofa frame matters

The frame supports the seats, back, arms and suspension. Structural faults can therefore affect far more than appearance. This is why some UK retailers give the frame a much longer guarantee than upholstery, fillings or mechanisms.

DFS currently provides a 15-year structural guarantee on its wooden-framed upholstered furniture, covering manufacturing defects or failures of the frame construction and suspension. That is separate from its shorter manufacturing warranty for fabrics, fillings and mechanisms.

Hardwood vs softwood: is hardwood always better?

No single material label tells you everything about a finished sofa. What does a long frame guarantee tell you?

A long structural guarantee is useful because it tells you what the retailer is prepared to cover for a stated period, but it is not a universal durability score. Read the terms: guarantees can be limited to manufacturing faults, domestic use, the original purchaser and particular components.

DFS currently states that its structural guarantee excludes accidental damage and wear and tear and requires proof of purchase. Compare those details rather than looking only at the headline number.

Split frames can solve an access problem

DFS currently says its sofas are independently tested for strength and durability and that its sofa range carries a British Standard Kitemark. Treat such evidence as one part of the comparison, alongside the exact product specification and guarantee terms.

What should you check on a product page?

• Does the retailer state what the frame is made from?
• Is the frame solid wood, a mixed construction, or simply described as wooden?
• What suspension supports the seat?

Does a hardwood frame automatically mean a better sofa?
